This is an outstanding example of one of the first 7-1/2" Navy Standard compasses. The 7-1/2" diameter dial compass was the standard U.S. Navy Ships compass for over 100 years.
This compass was in very good condition before it was carefully restored by the technicians at E.S Ritchie. All the seals were replaced, and the compass was refilled with the correct fluid.
It is interesting to note that the Serial number on the bezel (3311) can be found in the log books at E.S Ritchie
as being sold on November 2 1870, with a second date under that entry March 10th 1886 and yet a second serial number is stamped on the inside of the compass. Number 14917 is stamped on the inside of the compass is listed in the log books as being sold on March 10,1886.
This compass is complete with a gimbal ring but does not have a box.
